How Do I Call In An Emergency Using 9-1-1?

Should you be involved in or observe a police, fire or medical emergency you can dial 9-1-1 to get immediate and expert help from the Neptune Beach Police Department. When you call in, it is recommended that you follow these steps:

  1. Remain calm and stay on the line.
  2. Answer all questions asked of you by the Neptune Beach Police Dispatcher that you speak to.
  3. Follow all instructions that the dispatcher gives you.
  4. Stay on the line until the dispatcher ends the call.

The 9-1-1 service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The enhanced 9-1-1 service provides the Communications Center with the caller’s name, address and telephone number. However, there are times when the information is not correct, i.e. when using a cellular telephone and/or when you move and keep the same telephone number. Therefore, the dispatcher will want you to verify the information by asking you who you are, where you are, the telephone number and what your emergency is. All this information is essential to provide you the appropriate response form the department.

Do not use 9-1-1 to call in non-emergencies, such as noisy neighbors, a loud party, barking dogs, or to ask why the electric power is off. Reserve the use of 9-1-1 for true emergencies. It is a good idea to teach young children how to use 9-1-1, when to use it, and the importance of not using it to play.

If you or any member of your household accidentally dials 9-1-1, stay on line and tell the dispatcher it is an error.
